About Us

Land Acknowledgement

VON Durham Hospice Services serves all of the residents of Durham Region with respect and dignity.  We respectfully acknowledge that the land on which we serve and operate on is the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, which is home to many First Nation, Inuit, and Métis People. We are a team that is committed to learning, understanding, and acknowledging the colonialist history faced by Indigenous peoples and the impact this history has today. We aim to provide culturally safe and anti-bias approaches to hospice palliative care across our team’s disciplines.

Live Every Day

VON Durham Hospice Services is a not-for-profit organization that serves individuals in Durham Region and their families facing advanced illness, death, grief and bereavement through volunteer based Palliative Care, Caregiver Support, Bereavement Support, Community Awareness, and Fundraising Services. We are fortunate to have more than 200 volunteers at VON Durham who donate approximately 11,000 hours of service to 550 individuals and their families.

VON Durham offers a Palliative Care Community Team (PCCT) who, along with the individual’s Circle of Care, provides holistic person-centred palliative care to individuals from early diagnosis through to bereavement.

Our staff and trained volunteers work in partnership with community health care professionals and other service providers in an effort to enhance the quality of client care.

Our volunteers are rigorously screened and trained to assist individuals benefiting from a palliative care approach, at home, in hospital, or Long-Term Care.

Each individual journey with grief and bereavement is different, and some may find they need support in the days, weeks, months or years after a loss has occurred. VON Durham Hospice Services can support bereaved individuals in connecting with highly trained volunteers who have experienced a similar loss.

We strongly believe that clients and their families have the right to make informed decisions about their care

VON Community Corporations

Like people, not all communities are the same – and responding to local need is a VON strength.  Our Community Corporations are local charitable corporations made up of volunteer leaders who support VON Canada’s mission in their own communities. In partnership with VON Canada staff, they help build relationships with other local leaders and community groups, agencies and others to strengthen VON’s work. They raise funds to support VON clients, programs and initiatives, and advocate on behalf of VON in their communities. And they work with each other, and with VON’s national leadership, to support VON wherever we provide care.
