Live Every Day
VON Canada has been pioneering care at home for over 120 years. Today, we are a highly-trusted non-profit organization that works with our clients, employees, volunteers and partners to provide innovative clinical, personal and social support to people who want the comfort and peace of mind of living in their own homes and communities.
VON Durham Hospice Services (Hospice Services) provides Hospice Palliative Care Services to residents of Durham Region. We provide emotional, social, and spiritual support to individuals and families facing life-limiting diagnoses, advanced illness, death, and bereavement. Our staff and trained volunteers work in partnership with community health care professionals and other service providers in an effort to enhance the quality of client care. Our staff and volunteers are also available to provide anticipatory grief and bereavement support to family members and friends, as well as advance care planning support.
Our volunteers are rigorously screened and trained to assist palliative clients at home, in hospital, or Long-Term Care. Each volunteer is matched with the same client for up to one 4-hour shift per week, and can assist with a variety of care needs. VON Durham Hospice Services may be able to increase the number of volunteers providing support, depending on volunteer availability and a client’s need.
When you experience a loss, you may be faced with a difficult journey. You may feel loss, pain, fear, exhaustion, or loneliness, but you do not need to grieve alone. VON Durham Hospice Services can support you in accessing the service(s) best suited to your needs, including: a one-to-one volunteer match, a support group, or referral to outside resources.
We strongly believe that clients and their families have the right to make informed decisions about their care, and we encourage them to become partners in both the planning and delivery of their care. Personal and cultural values are part of that, and we ensure that every Plan of Care we develop responds to the needs and concerns of our clients and their families.
With the help of our funders, donors, volunteers and committed staff, VON Canada offers dozens of programs and services across Ontario and Nova Scotia that provide real hands-on help to seniors, children, youth and adults who need extra support. With our 6,400 employees and 6,200 volunteers, we help Canadians stay healthy, live well and remain active. We support those in frail and failing health. And, together with our clients and their families, we contribute to the health and improved quality of life of Canadians in their homes and communities, where they want to be.
VON Community Corporations
Like people, not all communities are the same – and responding to local need is a VON strength. Our Community Corporations are local charitable corporations made up of volunteer leaders who support VON Canada’s mission in their own communities. In partnership with VON Canada staff, they help build relationships with other local leaders and community groups, agencies and others to strengthen VON’s work. They raise funds to support VON clients, programs and initiatives, and advocate on behalf of VON in their communities. And they work with each other, and with VON’s national leadership, to support VON wherever we provide care.
